The Quality of the Relationship
Mentoring is primarily about creating an enduring and meaningful relationship with another person. While the relationship may be short-term, the focus is primarily on the quality of that relationship and the factors that affect relationship quality, such as mutual respect, willingness to learn from each other and the use of deeper interpersonal skills. While mentors might provide advice or suggestions, they have no stake in whether the partner actually uses or integrates such information into their work or personal life. Mentors and their partners typically look forward to their meeting together and make every effort to preserve their meeting time.

Safe Space
Unconditional acceptance is a key ingrediant for establishing trust and a safe place. When one experiences unconditional acceptance and a sense of belonging, one is able to more clearly reveal and be themselves. Accepting others for who they are, without apology or explanation, is therefore an essential aspect of mentoring. With total acceptance, one feels trusted and known, and is able to take great risks. In a safe space, nothing is taboo.

A Mentor is.....
A mentor is an experienced person who acts as a role model, guide or leader. They have experience in the work world and/or community involvement, and share this experience, advice and encouragement with students. These students are in the process of determining their future post-school options. Mentors suggest resources that students can access and may help the students to make links between career and community interests.
Mentors help bridge the gap between the classroom and career or community opportunities.
